Dick peeples is a beloved icon of the Dallas GLBT community, propelled into gay political activism in 1977 by the Anita Bryant campaign against equality for the GLBT community in Miami-Dade County. He was the first non-Houston member of the newly expanded Texas Human Rights Foundation in 1978, serving in that capacity for 13 years in the management and design of two court challenges to Section 21.06 of the Texas Penal Code. He served on the boards of many iconic organizations: Dallas Gay Political Caucus (now DGLA), Dallas Independent Volleyball Association, Stonewall Professional & Business Association (including service as board chair), Diginity Dallas (including service as board chair), Leadership Lambda, Turtle Creek Chorale (including serving as secretary and treasurer), Oak Lawn Community Services (including service as board chair), Gay & Lesbian Fund for Dallas (including service as board chair). He is the honored recipient of the 1993 THRF Robert Schwab Award, 1993 Masterpiece Award of the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, and the 1997 Kuchling Award presented by the Dallas' Black Tie Dinner.
