Badge of Pride Pop-Up Exhibit - Irving Archives & Museum

The pop-up exhibit includes posters and some of the earliest protest buttons of the nascent Gay LIberation movement, some issued immediately after the Stonewall Uprising, including an artifact with a direct connection to Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Visitors can also view and listen to some of the earliest music records issued for and by the community, including those released by the Daughters Of Bilitis and the first recorded Gay Liberation anthem, "Stonewall Nation." Another highlight of the exhibit, items rarely ever seen outside of San Francisco, LA or New York, are artifacts from the life, assassination and legacy of Harvey Milk.

The limited-viewing, pop-up exhibit is just a sample of a larger project still in development. Of the project, Badge of Pride Executive Director Adrian Cardwell said, “We are developing a full-scale exhibition titled Badge Of Pride: From Silence…To Celebration! that will launch next summer, opening Pride Month 2025 and running thru October, LGBTQ History Month. “We will feature a panel of the National AIDS Memorial Quilt with a North Texas connection, and we will be including artifacts from local organizations like YesterQueer in Fort Worth, The Dallas Way, Uptown Players, and more.”

Badge Of Pride is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which aims to collect and activate artifacts from LGBTQIA+ history to inform, enrich and engage the power of the contemporary Queer experience. With a strong commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich legacy of the Queer community, Badge Of Pride seeks to create an inclusive and engaging environment which fosters understanding, inspiration, and social change.

1.  Dr. Wesley Phelps is a professor of history at Sam Houston State University who is currently writing a book covering legal challenges to Texas sodomy laws, including a chapter on Dallas's own landmark civil rights case, Baker vs. Wade, bringing to life the heroic story of the Texas Human Rights Foundation like never before. Come hear the fascinating story of how a humble law suit in Dallas, Texas, filed on behalf of a volunteer plaintiff named Don Baker, rallied the GLBT community of the entire state and started a chain reaction in the world of courts and judges that ended up changing the world for gay people throughout the country.  In the end, state laws criminalizing same-sex relations were ruled no longer tolerable under the United States Constitution ... the bold premise of Baker vs. Wade.

2.   Betty K Neal is our freind who says, “I have never been in the Closet, I’m designed this way.”  Betty is one of the original Alan Ross Pride Parade board members, one of the original Dallas Southern Pride board members (and an avid supporter of its new leadership), and an original member of Stud Takeover Vegas. She’s a lover of all things “Drag,” a pageant owner, and a lifetime friend to the Entire LGBTQ Community.  Betty is also an advocate for the homeless population of the city and serves as Co-CEO of THE GOOD JUDY GIRLS Blanket the Homeless.

3.  In 2013, Gary Garcia was staring death straight in the face.  Through no fault of his own, Gary suffered from sudden and acute liver failure and was told he needed a liver transplant ... a critical medical crisis for anyone. To complicate his situation further, Gary was also living with HIV. After one physician told him to go home and take care of his affairs, he knew he had to fight for his life in more ways than one.  Gary’s hope is that by sharing his powerful story, others will have a better understanding of the importance of registering to be an organ donor and help save lives after their own has ended.

Screening of After Goodbye: An AIDS Story

UNT Special Collections and the UNT Pride Alliance are pleased to present a screening of the film After Goodbye: An AIDS Story as part of a semester-long collaboration dedicated to programming related to the impact of HIV/AIDS on the LGBTQ+ community of Dallas, Texas.

This Emmy-winning documentary produced by KERA examines the impact of AIDS on the Turtle Creek Chorale, a men’s chorus based in Dallas, which lost more than 90 of its members to AIDS at the time of film production, and nearly 200 as of today. The film explores how the Chorale banded together to navigate grief and acceptance through music.

Join us at 6:30pm in the UNT Gateway Center, Ballroom 34 for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The film will begin at 7pm, and members of the Turtle Creek Chorale A Capella group Camerata will perform throughout the evening.

We invite you to join us after the film for a Q&A session. Kathleen Hobson-Bond, Director of the UNT Pride Alliance, will moderate this discussion.

"Hit the Wall" at Water Tower Theatre on Wednesday, August 16th, 2017 at 7:30PM

Join The Dallas Way for a performance of "Hit The Wall" at Water Tower Theatre on August 16h at 7:30PM.  TDW guests can purchase discounted tickets for $22.  To obtain the discount, call the box office at 972-450-6232, and tell Kayla Freeman you are with The Dallas Way.

The show follows a diverse group of young people as a joyful evening at a gay nightclub, following the death of the iconic Judy Garland, is brutally interrupted by a police raid that touches off days of violent protests. Hit the Wallpremiered in 2012 at Chicago's famed Steppenwolf Theatre. Hit the Wall transports audiences to the Stonewall Riots in New York's Greenwich Village on June 27-28, 1969, when a routine police raid on an underground gay hotspot became a foundational moment for the modern gay rights movement. Featuring a howling live rock band that evokes the era's proto-punk music and fast-paced, sharp dialogue, the vivid theatrical re-imagination focuses on ten unlikely revolutionaries, each claiming in turn "I was there."

Hit the Wall is recommended for mature audiences only due to adult content and language.
