In July of 2011, Jack Evans and George Harris proposed the idea that “someone ought to collect the GLBT history of Dallas.” On Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 4PM, Jack hosted a meeting at Resource Center Dallas where he shared his idea with 17 curious attendees, who, in turn, shared colorful stories of their own. A follow-up meeting was scheduled for Thursday, Sept 15, 2011 at 6pm in the Great Room at the ilume, located at 4123 Cedar Springs (room reservation arranged by Tony Vedda, Chairman of the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce). 31 enthusiastic people attended this meeting. This informal meeting was repeated, monthly, on October 20, November 10, and December 8 of 2011. Carl Parker, who realized we needed a smaller group to meet more often than the larger monthly community group meetings, gathered Mike Anglin, Buddy Mullino, and Robert Emery, along with Jack & George.
This “group of 6” met weekly, in between the monthly community meetings, to develop initial organization structure necessary for the creation of a new non-profit. Mike Anglin agreed to handle all business related to obtaining a Texas non-profit corporation charter and becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit, while Robert Emery volunteered to be our Secretary/Historian.
During the September community meeting, Stan Aten suggested we call ourselves: The Dallas Way, since the Dallas gay and lesbian community has always had a uniquely effective, orderly, cooperative, strategic, cohesive, and dramatic way of doing things. Louise Young suggested our name be enhanced by a descriptive subtitle: the GLBT history project. We all agreed, and we had our name. When Rafiq Salleh created our Logo, our name formally coalesced into The Dallas Way: a GLBT history project. Bruce Monroe established a Facebook presence, as a gateway to collecting stories: http://www.facebook.com/groups/257817754259165/
The Dallas Way was chartered as a Texas Non-Profit Corporation on Oct. 11, 2011. Mike Anglin did the legal work. On Nov 15, 2011, Carl Parker opened a bank account for the organization. Robert Emery, as agent, signed the original By-Laws document.
The third general planning meeting held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 (6pm 4123 Cedar Springs -- Great Room at the ilume) was attended by the following members of the GLBT community to give input on organizing strategies: Jack Evans, George Harris, Mike Anglin, Buddy Mullino, Carl Parker, Robert Emery, Stan Aten, Bruce Monroe, Karen McCroklin, TJ Wilson, Jay Forte, Mike Grossman, George Amerson, Mark Vosvick, Rick Vanderslice, Truett Davis, Dreanna Belden, Spencer Keralis, Sue Parks, Mark Sadlek, Paul J Williams.
Our January 17, 2012, meeting, at Park Towers Condominiums, marked our first official meeting with a sitting Board of Directors: Jack Evans, President; George Harris, Vice-President; Rebecca Covell, Secretary; Carl Parker, Treasurer. Board members were: Mike Anglin, Robert Emery, Buddy Mullino, Anne Fay, Bruce Monroe, Dennis Coleman, Evilu Pridgeon, Mike Grossman, Stan Aten, and Jay Forte. Shortly, Jay Forte needed to resign, and Steve Atkinson was voted in as his replacement. We created our Mission Statement during this first meeting: The mission of The Dallas Way is to gather, organize, store, and present the complete GLBT history of Dallas, Texas. On January 19, 2012, we received our first press coverage in The Dallas VOICE: http://www.dallasvoice.com/lgbt-history-project-focus-1099245.html The Dallas Way received its 501(c)(3) tax exemption from the IRS on April 20, 2012.

Featuring Dr. Wesley Phelps (The History of Baker v Wade), Betty K. Neal, Gary Garcia
The mission of The Dallas Way is to gather, organize, store, and present the complete GLBT history of Dallas, Texas. Founded in 2011, TDW has led the effort to preserve the untold and under-told history of one of the most vibrant and productive communities in the City of Dallas. TDW’s valuable archive collections of photographs, news clippings, court documents, correspondences, speech transcripts, personal notes and memoirs, organizational documents, and video speeches and video interviews have been donated to TDW by individuals and organizations across the City, curated by TDW, and then forwarded to the UNT where they are permanently preserved, as well as painstakingly analyzed, described, and scanned into digital documents which are then uploaded to UNT’s “Portal to Texas History” making those unique and invaluable archives available over the internet to researchers and scholars around the world. To date, TDW has funded $50,000 of the cost of this large-scale digitization project at UNT, which is the largest LGBT project underway anywhere in the world today
